Buying a Car on Dhanteras 2026: What the Data Says, What Dealers Hope You Miss

Buying a Car on Dhanteras 2026: What the Data Says, What Dealers Hope You Miss

Dhanteras lands on Friday, November 6 this year, with Diwali following two days later on November 8. If you have been planning a car purchase and holding off “until the festive season,” this is it. The window is real, the discounts are real, but so are the traps that catch buyers who go in unprepared.

Why Dhanteras Is the Biggest Single Day in Indian Car Retail

During Navratri-Diwali 2025, passenger vehicle sales grew 15 to 35 percent across OEMs versus the same window the year before. Maruti Suzuki recorded 51,000 units sold on Dhanteras day alone, their best single-day retail number on record. Hyundai delivered 14,000 cars that day, 20 percent more than the previous Dhanteras. Tata Motors pushed out over 1 lakh vehicles during the full festive window, with the Nexon seeing 73 percent year-on-year growth during that period.

SIAM’s monthly data for October 2025 showed 4,60,739 passenger vehicles sold across India, a 17.2 percent jump over October 2024. SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon pointed to the combined effect of festive demand and the prevailing GST rate structure as the driver behind those registration numbers.

What this means for 2026: demand will spike again, OEMs will push dealers to hit targets, and genuine deals will be on the table. But so will the crowd, the paperwork backlog at RTOs, and “festive offer” language that sometimes dresses up standard schemes in seasonal packaging.

What a Genuine Festive Deal Looks Like

Legitimate festive benefits come in four forms. Exchange bonuses on your existing car, which typically run from Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 depending on make and model. Free or reduced-cost accessories bundles, usually alloys, floor mats, dashcams, or seat covers. Reduced processing fees on car loans. And corporate or loyalty discounts that stack on top of the base offer.

Banks also move during the festive window. In festive season 2025, several lenders offered car loans from 7.6 percent with processing fees waived entirely. SBI currently runs from 7.75 to 8.45 percent depending on your CIBIL score and tenure, with a processing fee of 0.40 percent of the loan amount plus GST. ICICI starts from 8.40 percent on tenures above 36 months. If during the festive window a bank offers sub-7.75 percent with no processing fee, that is a saving worth calculating in rupees, not just percentages.

The EMI vs Total Cost Calculation

Do not evaluate a loan offer by the monthly EMI figure. Calculate the total outflow over the loan tenure. A Rs 10 lakh loan at 8 percent for 7 years means you pay back roughly Rs 13.6 lakh total. At 7.6 percent for the same tenure, that drops to about Rs 13.3 lakh. That Rs 30,000 difference is what a festive rate cut is actually worth.

Offers That Look Good but Are Not

Subvention schemes deserve careful reading. When a manufacturer advertises “0 percent interest for 12 months,” the interest cost is typically funded from what would otherwise have been your cash discount. The OEM pays the bank a subvention amount, which comes out of the buyer’s discount pool. The Reserve Bank of India has flagged this structure repeatedly because the interest does not disappear, it just moves to a place that is harder to see.

Some showrooms bundle insurance and accessories into the “festive package” and present the combined total as a discount figure. If you were not planning to buy extended warranty or window film anyway, the bundled saving is just margin reallocated, not removed.

Timing Your Visit for Dhanteras 2026

Dhanteras falls on a Friday this year. Diwali is that Sunday. Showroom traffic on Dhanteras day will be intense, with staff stretched across deliveries, new bookings, and paperwork for everyone who decided the same day was auspicious. If you want a focused conversation with the sales team and more room to negotiate, the two weeks before Dhanteras are the stronger window.

OEMs push retailers toward month-end targets, which means the last week of October and first days of November typically carry the same festive pricing with far less pressure. Book in that window and schedule your delivery for Dhanteras day. You get the commercial advantage of a calmer negotiation and the auspicious delivery timing.

RC and RTO Timelines During Festive Season

Registration Certificate processing slows during the festive window. Every major-city RTO handles a spike in applications, and what normally takes 5 to 7 working days can stretch to 10 to 14 days. If you are financing the car, the hypothecation endorsement on the RC adds another step through the bank.

Plan for this in advance. A November 6 delivery is a valid Dhanteras purchase even if the RC arrives two weeks later. The purchase date marks the occasion, not the RC issuance date.

What to Have Ready Before You Walk In

Check your CIBIL score before approaching any bank. Above 750 is where the better rates live. Know your old car’s resale value from multiple sources before the showroom visit. Organise your PAN card, Aadhaar, Form 16 or latest ITR, and three months of salary slips before your first visit. Loan documentation delays are the most common reason festive deliveries slip past the muhurat window.

Confirmed OEM festive offers for 2026 will typically be announced in October. We will update this post with verified numbers from Maruti, Tata, Hyundai, and Mahindra as they come through. If you want those before the showroom banners go up, reach out through the consultancy.
