In a remarkable feat of engineering and endurance, Mercedes-Benz’s new VLE test vehicles completed an arduous 1,090-kilometer journey from Stuttgart to Rome, navigating the challenging terrain of the Alps with only two brief charging stops of 15 minutes each.

This demanding route, which included winding mountain passes, long stretches of freeway, bustling country roads, and narrow Italian city streets, showcased the VLE’s readiness for everyday use, catering to families, leisure travelers, and discerning customers seeking versatility and luxury.

Remarkable Stuttgart-to-Rome Test Demonstrates Van Electric Architecture Excellence

Throughout the 13-hour trek, the vehicles maintained optimum comfort with a consistent interior temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, despite external conditions ranging from a cool 11 degrees in Stuttgart to a sweltering 33 degrees upon arrival in Rome.

Central to this seamless journey was the innovative rear-axle steering system, which ensured exceptional agility and effortless handling on tight curves and confined urban environments—further cementing the VLE’s adaptability in diverse driving scenarios.

Comprehensive Validation Under Real-World Conditions

The Stuttgart-to-Rome drive formed part of Mercedes-Benz’s extensive maturity-level validation program for the VLE, complementing prior trials that included a northern expedition to Norway’s North Cape and rigorous cold-weather testing in Sweden during winter 2025.

These real-world assessments are crucial for fine-tuning the vehicle’s performance, efficiency, recuperation systems, and thermal management to prepare for production readiness.

Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development for Mercedes-Benz Vans, emphasized the significance of this milestone: “Our future MPVs have once again impressively demonstrated their suitability for everyday use on the long-distance route.

With just two short charging stops from Stuttgart, across the Alps, to Rome—the Mercedes‑Benz VLE demonstrates impressive efficiency of the new Van Electric Architecture.”

Heralding a New Era in Van Design and Luxury

Scheduled for introduction in 2026, the modular and scalable Van Electric Architecture marks a pivotal shift for Mercedes-Benz.

It distinctly separates models aimed at private luxury users—Grand Limousines—from commercial transporters, offering tailored designs, features, and usability to meet varied customer demands.

Looking Ahead

The VLE, designed as a versatile electric MPV seating up to eight, spans from flexible family travel to exclusive VIP shuttle services.

Alongside the forthcoming VLS, Mercedes-Benz will introduce all-electric midsize luxury vehicles to key markets including the U.S., Canada, and China, elevating the definition of automotive luxury and sustainability.
